Santorini, Greece

Last year I was fortunate enough to visit one of the most beautiful and romantic places on this planet: Santorini. We spent a total of 4 nights there: 2 in Firostefani and 2 in Oia.

Upon arrival at our first hotel in Firostefani at Blue Dolphins Apartments & Suites, I was mesmerized when I saw the caldera view for the first time. It was quite a breathtaking sight, especially after a long journey from San Francisco.

Since we are budget travelers, we originally booked the most basic room. Though when we arrived, we were upgraded to a large room with a huge private balcony. Unbelievable!

Location-wise, Firostefani was great since it was less crowded and further away from the hustle and bustle of Fira (the capital) but still within walking distance to Fira (about 20 minutes).

Oia was even more amazing. This little village is known for its famous blue-domed churches and those cute, picturesque white houses. I must've taken about a thousand photos during our 2-day stay there. Not to mention, we had yet another amazing view from our private studio we rented from Old Oia Houses (which was really affordable as well!)

Tips

  • In Oia (and in Fira & Firostefani as well), be sure to wander around the tiny pathways that go off from the main tourist paths (towards the sea). These take you through a whole network of quiet paths along the cliff and you'll be able to see all the little houses on the cliffs. It's like a fun little maze to explore and you never know where the next turn will take you. Many "mainstream" tourists don't seem to bother or know to do this, hence they miss out on some of the best views and experiences of Santorini.
